Types of Opponents
A very important aspect of the game is to recognise your opponents' style. This is of utmost importance in No-Limit. When you sit down at a table you should use the first 15-20 minutes of play to categorise players into one of 4 types:
Tight / Passive: These players are merely waiting for the big hand and/or are inexperienced at No-Limit. They don't play many hands, and don't bet big usually. In fact, these players may actually have had success in Limit, as the Tight/Passive player can win there. They won't have much success in No-Limit, however, so raise and bluff them when the situation presents. If they do call a hand, though, it's a near certainty that they have a hand...so don't overdo it.
Loose / Passive: These players will make you the money (if they hang around long enough). They simply fish to the river with typically the 2nd or 3rd best hand hoping you're on the bluff. Make them pay when you have the killer hand and send them limping back to the limit tables.
Tight / Aggressive: Usually the correct strategy for No-Limit. Wait for the nice cards, and apply the screws once your hand hits. Make sure you start with a sufficient stack, so that you're not afraid to call. You may be easily read by the other good players, so mix up your tactics now and again to keep them off balance.
Loose / Aggressive: These players can be very dangerous to play against as they will be quite aggressive on many hands. They will steal pots with impunity from other, awed opponents. The more maniacal of this bunch, however, can be easily trapped and manipulated. When the cards turn in your favor, play him for all he's worth and pummel his stack. This player's lack of discipline and unrestrained bravado often creates a recipe for disaster.
